7 Greek Islands You Should Visit Before Everyone Else
Santorini and Mykonos are not overrated so much as over-visited. The Aegean has around two hundred inhabited islands, and the ferry network reaches most of them.
The rule that matters: fewer islands, longer stays. Two ferries in a week is civilised. Five is a logistics exercise with sea views.
The seven
Sifnos for food — the island takes its cooking seriously and it shows. Folegandros for the cliff-top Chora and almost nothing else, which is the appeal. Amorgos for the walking. Kythnos because it is two hours from Athens and nobody goes. Symi for the harbour, which is the prettiest in the country. Ikaria for the pace, which is famously and literally life-extending. Tinos for the villages, of which there are fifty.
The afternoon closure is not an inconvenience. It is the entire reason to be there.
Ferries, honestly
Book the fast boats in advance in August and turn up for the slow ones any other month. Delays happen; build a spare day before your flight home. The deck is better than the lounge in every weather except rain.
