Switzerland in Summer: A Nature Lover’s Paradise
A Swiss Travel Pass is expensive until the third day, at which point it quietly becomes the best value in European travel. Here is how we spent two weeks proving it.
The mistake most people make is treating Switzerland as one destination. It is a series of valleys that happen to share a flag, and the difference between two of them — an hour apart by train — is bigger than the difference between two countries elsewhere.
We picked six and gave each of them two nights. That sounds slow. It is exactly right.
The rail pass maths
Buy the pass if you are moving every second day or more. It covers the trains, most of the boats, the buses in the valleys, and half the mountain railways at fifty percent. It does not cover the cable car that matters most to you, because that is how these things work.
The valley you think is the famous one is usually the one everyone else is in.
Booking the huts
Reservations open in spring and the good huts fill within days. Book before you plan the route; you can walk to a hut in several ways, but you cannot sleep in one that is full. Cash, earplugs, and a silk liner — that is the whole packing list beyond the obvious.
What we would change
Two fewer valleys, two more nights in Kandersteg. The last morning, walking down from Oeschinensee before the first lift, was the part of the trip we still talk about.
